Settlements needs governors ( your kids and companions are good for that ) and they need to have children as your first character dies and you play his/her progeny. There are several tactics to employ over time to further the borders of your realm but the base needs to be strong but fluid.
Download one of the mods that changes settlement culture after you own the settlement for a while and enjoy. The -3 loyalty penalty makes sense for a year or maybe even a few years after conquering a place, but making it an indefinite penalty doesn't make sense and just isn't tenable.

If you’re playing through Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord, you will eventually want to start your Clan down the path of noble lineage. To get your own kingdom, you first have to gain your own settlement. Sure, you can steal a settlement from another Noble or Kingdom, but that will lead to a war you are almost certainly not ready for this early 1- Wash your hands everyday to avoid getting sick. (Daily Default) 2- Stay at home and respect social distancing to avoid a worse escalation of the Coronavirus' pandemic. (Edict) You don't really lose anything in normal days if you do or don't wash your hands, it is just good for your hygiene.
Influence cheat. Start a war as a vassal. I did that too. Be in a kingdom and raid a village and start a war. If you have your own kingdom, get the policies "Council of the Commons" and "Feudal Inheritance" for massive amounts of influence per day. Council of the Commons alone is giving me 192 influence per day.
